What's in a Name?

" What's the name of your baby" my 2 year old niece asked? "I don't know. We haven't named it yet. What do you think we should call it?" I respond. "Bill!" volunteers my sarcarstic hubby. "Biiiilllllll!" she says disgustedly, "NOT Bill"

The baby's name will not be Bill.

Not that we had wanted to name it that, but how could you when the name causes a 2 year old to look as though she has swallowed the lemon tree?

We don't know what the baby's name will be, won't for several months. We are in the minority of parents to be who are choosing NOT to find out the gender. A good friend is appalled! "Well what do you call it?" "Junior" I reply calmly. "But what if it is a girl?" She is saying this to a girl who was called "Little (insert my father's name here)" my entire childhood. "I think she will be fine"

"What should we call the baby?" I asked my niece again. "Bear" she said with confidence. So we call the baby Bear.

And here I thought it was "Bear" because of that whole Gummy Bear thing!

I think it's cool that you're waiting. Adds to the surprise. For the record, I'm voting for "girl" because everyone I know these days is having "boys." So my vote, if nothing else, was in hopes of continuing the species. We certainly can't do that if EVERYONE continues having boys.

That includes my sister, whose upcoming progeny was proposed to be called "Obi Wan" by my four-year-old nephew.

This is why we don't let kids name kids.

PS - I can make out Bear's head!

I think.

I don't know why Obi Wan, or Biiilll are bad names. I mean really, what's the big deal? They'll get poked fun of regardless. I guess trying to reduce that could be beneficial.

I know. People can take seemingly normal names and twist them around. For example. Erin. Sounds innocent enough right? Until someone picks up that it sounds similar to "Air In" As in Air in the Head!"

Tragic what kids will do!

Yeah, that's crazy and wrong. I hope that poor child isn't scarred.

To misquote Paul Simon you could just "call it Al." That way, if its a boy, it can be Allen or Albert (okay neither name great) and if'n its a girl it can be Alice.

I dub it Al.

I think Bear is a fine name, I actually know a few, but I used to live in California so---
As a busybody and concerned midwife, if you are not going to obsess about knowing what sex your baby is before it is born, do little bear a favor, stop getting routine sonograms. Babies find them incredibly disturbing, the jury is still out on the effects on their nervous systems. Just saying
